A severe thunderstorm raged through Delhi during the night, causing havoc to the city and disrupting air travel quite badly. The storm, with heavy showers and gusts of wind up to 82 kmph, caused 49 flights to be diverted and several other delays at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Flight Disruptions at IGI Airport
11:30 PM to 4:00 AM was the time when operations of flights were disrupted as airlines tried to fly through the unfavorable weather conditions. IndiGo Airlines had confirmed "temporary disruptions in flight operations" in an X post at 3:59 AM, reporting that airside congestion was subsiding. Flights resumed by 5:54 AM, though delays continued.
As per Flightradar24.com, a number of flights continued to be delayed or canceled, with the average departure delay being more than 30 minutes. The storm impacted domestic as well as international flights, which made airlines divert planes to other airports.
Severe Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos
The storm not only disturbed air travel—it ravaged the roads in Delhi too. Some of the main areas, such as Moti Bagh, Minto Road, Delhi Cantonment, and Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, were also half-submerged due to massive waterlogging.
Footage from Delhi Cantt revealed cars stuck in waterlogged underpasses, while people were hit by huge traffic jams in places like ITO, Dhaula Kuan, Subroto Park, Nanakpura Underpass, and Chanakyapuri.
IMD's Red Alert and Weather Forecast
India Meteorological Department (IMD) had on Saturday issued a red alert for Delhi and its neighborhoods about the possibility of thunderstorms, heavy rain, and gusty winds. The storm accounted for 81.2 mm of rain in a mere six hours, from 11:30 PM to 5:30 AM.
Though skies brightened by early morning, lingering delays and disruptions still impacted flight schedules and traffic on roads. Officials asked passengers to monitor their flight status frequently and commuters to steer clear of waterlogged areas.
Conclusion
The night storm was a grim reminder of how unpredictable the weather can be in paralyzing urban life. With 49 flights being diverted, major waterlogging, and traffic jams, Delhi experienced one of its most severe weather-induced disruptions in recent times. While the city gets back to normal, travelers and residents alike remain vigilant, hoping for better skies to come.
