Prime Minister Narendra Modi went to Alipurduar, West Bengal, on May 29, 2025, to address a huge public meeting and lay the foundation for a ₹1,010-crore City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Cooch Behar and Alipurduar districts. The visit is scheduled at a critical juncture, with political activity in Bengal heating up ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.
A Development-Oriented Address
PM Modi, while delivering a speech, stressed the significance of Bengal's involvement in taking India forward as a developed nation. He brought attention to the CGD project, which will supply piped natural gas (PNG) to more than 2.5 lakh homes and compressed natural gas (CNG) to the transport sector through 19 new CNG stations. The project is set to generate jobs and offer a green, cheaper fuel supply.
Operation Sindoor and National Security
PM Modi also referenced Operation Sindoor, India's military operation against the Pahalgam attack, saying that the operation is "not yet over". He complimented the Indian armed forces for their bold action against cross-border terrorism and took the audience down the memory lane to highlight the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, among other historical events, in order to emphasize India's focus on national security.
Criticism of the Mamata Banerjee Government
The Prime Minister was not sparing in his attack on the government of Trinamool Congress (TMC), charging it with corruption, lawlessness, and politics of appeasement5. He mentioned instances of violence in Malda and Murshidabad as examples of the brutality shown by the ruling party. He also referred to the school recruitment scam, in which thousands of appointments were cancelled by the Supreme Court, and faulted the TMC for its inability to ensure justice.
A Call to Action for Bengal
PM Modi appealed to the citizens of Bengal to turn away from divisive politics and contribute towards a Viksit Bharat (Developed India). He promised the audience that a BJP-NDA government would usher development, safety, and justice for all citizens. His words were met with much enthusiasm, as he appealed to the youth of Bengal to seize the initiative to write their state's future.
