Possible Motives and Investigation

The authorities are examining the crime as a potential femicide, which is gender-based murder that disproportionately targets women in Mexico. The motive is not certain, but speculation has been generated about the role of organized crime. Ricardo Ruiz Velazco, the leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generacion Cartel (CJNG), has reportedly been accused of involvement, but officials have not yet established any direct cartel connection.

Mexico's Femicide Crisis

Marquez's tragic fatality puts the spotlight on Mexico's shocking femicide rate, where 10 women or girls are killed every day. Mexico is one of the top countries in Latin America for gender violence, with Jalisco logging 906 homicides since October 2024. Many crimes go unsolved despite heightened awareness, and victims' families are denied justice.
